    Description
These are an ORIGINAL pair of the RARE LAST VARIANT of the first pattern or "M1937" herringbone twill material ("HBT") fatigue pants issued to GI's in WWII. So rare, in fact that Charles Lemons' encyclopedic
Uniforms of the US Army Ground Forces 1939-1945
does not list them with the other variants in Volume 4.  These pants were prescribed in Tentative Specification PQD No. 371-B dated 5 December 1944 and likely were the final variant of the "P1937" pants. The first pattern is distinguishable from the second pattern HBT pants by the hung pockets at the side seams and rear seat, rather than the large thigh pockets covered with a buttoned flap which was used for the second pattern. They also had a small watch pocket on the right side (see image below).
Rather than having an internally-buttoned "gas flap" like the second variant of these pants standardized on 1 January 1943, these pants instead have only an extended fly flap, making it easier for the GI to "relieve himself" in the field.
By this point in the War, the pants were manufactured of dark OD#7 HBT fabric, rather than light OD#3, and were intended to be worn over the normal wool OD field pants during winter combat.  In recognition of this, the pants may be easily worn over the wool field pants with the use of suspenders which are threaded through a series of three pairs of "loops" on the inside of the waistband (see images below).  Alternatively, the pants can be suspended with a series of "13-Star" buttons on the OUTSIDE of the pants' waistband. The fly of the pants is closed with five "13-Star" metal riveted buttons, all of which are present. Lastly, the pants have two adjustment tabs, which can be buttoned to one of two pairs of buttons to adjust the waistband size. Several of these buttons have verdigris or soil on them, which can be buffed off and the buttons re-blackened with "M-Nu" or a similar product, if desired.
The pants are in MINT, UNNISSUED condition and have no holes, rips or tears.  The pants are size 34-30 both by the stamping in the waist and actual measurement. The overall length is 42.5".
The original size tag on the right pocket lining is present and unblemished (see image above).
The pants have a hem of 1.5" to "let down" to lengthen them, if desired, although I do not recommend wearing these pants!  Here's an opportunity for the advanced collector or re-enactor who chooses not to wear reproductions to acquire an actual pair of the rarest variant of the P1937 HBT pants. The buyer will have my usual unconditional guarantee of authenticity and a five-day (
